How do you install dichroic film?

Installing dichroic film requires careful preparation and attention to detail. Here are the general steps to install dichroic film:

Materials Needed:

Dichroic film
Glass cleaner or soapy water
Soft lint-free cloth or squeegee
A sharp utility knife or razor blade
Measuring tape
A spray bottle with soapy water (mix a few drops of dishwashing liquid in water)

Installation Steps:

Prepare the Surface:

Ensure the glass or acrylic surface where you plan to apply the dichroic film is clean and free from dust, dirt, and any residue. Use glass cleaner or a mixture of soapy water to clean the surface thoroughly. Rinse and dry it with a lint-free cloth.

Measure and Cut:

Measure the dimensions of the area where you want to apply the dichroic film. Leave a slight overlap for trimming. Mark the dimensions on the film's backing paper, then carefully cut the film to size using a sharp utility knife or razor blade.

Create a Work Area:

Set up a clean, dust-free work area where you can handle the film. Make sure the room is well-lit to help with positioning and smoothing out the film.

Peel the Backing:

Gently peel a small portion of the backing paper from one corner of the film. Be careful not to touch the adhesive side with your fingers as it may leave marks or fingerprints.

Apply the Film:

With the adhesive side exposed, lightly mist the adhesive with the soapy water solution. This helps prevent the film from sticking immediately, allowing you to adjust its position.

Position the Film:

Carefully place the adhesive side of the film against the glass or acrylic surface, aligning it with the edges and corners as needed. The soapy water will allow you to slide and adjust the film for proper positioning.

Smooth Out Air Bubbles:

Using a squeegee or a soft, lint-free cloth, start from the center of the film and gently press outward to remove any trapped air bubbles. Work slowly and methodically to ensure a smooth, bubble-free application.

Trim Excess Film:

Once the film is properly adhered to the surface and all air bubbles are removed, use a sharp utility knife or razor blade to trim any excess film along the edges. Be cautious during this step to avoid scratching the glass.

Final Check:

Inspect the installed dichroic film for any remaining air bubbles or imperfections. If you notice any, carefully lift the affected area and reapply, smoothing out as necessary.

Allow to Dry:

Let the film dry and adhere fully to the surface. This may take some time, so be patient. Avoid touching the film during this drying period.
